Tramadol is an effective analgesic that is used to help individuals manage pain more effectively. The drug, also known as Ultram when it is sold as a generic drug, belongs to the drug class called opiate agonists which are very much like narcotics. Many doctors prescribe this pain reliever to help people manage moderate to severe or chronic pain. Tramadol is meant to be used only as a temporary method of relieving severe pain, not as a long-term measure.
Benefits Of Tramadol
• Works very quickly – as fast as 30 minutes
• Treats chronic pain such as joint or cancer pain
• Reduces moderate to severe pain
• Can be used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
• May reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms
How It Works
Tramadol may be prescribed for immediate release or extended release. This depends on your situation. Most doctors will prescribe the immediate release version in 50 mg doses. However, time release tablets are available in higher doses – 100, 200 or 300 mgs. If you require longer term management for your pain, you may require time release Tramadol.
Taking Tramadol
You should always take Tramadol exactly as it is prescribed by your doctor or health care professional. This means you should never split, chew, inject or crush Tramadol because it can be fatal. Instead, you should take the tablets every 4 to 6 hours, depending on your particular level of pain. You can take the drug with or without food, as both methods are equally effective. Your doctor will decide what dosage you should take as you may have to start with a lower dosage that is increased gradually.
Possible Side Effects
Most individuals experience only minor side effects when taking Tramadol. These may include nausea, blurred vision, flushing, insomnia, weakness, constipation, vomiting, drowsiness or a loss of appetite. They will normally stop as soon as you discontinue taking the drug. If the symptoms continue or you experience a weak pulse, shallow breathing, blistering skin or convulsions, be sure to seek immediate medical attention. The drug can become addictive if you take it for an extended period so be sure to discuss the situation with your doctor.
