Tramadol is a synthetic opioids that is used to treat severe to moderate pain. The German company Grünenthal GmbH created the analgesic and marketed it under the name Tramadol to help individuals manage pain. Tramadol can be taken orally, intravenously or intramuscularly.
In the US, you may find Tramadol sold as Ultram which is actually Tramadol hydrochloride or hydrochloride salt. Another form of the drug is marketed as Ultracet. The appropriate dosage depends on the degree of pain. When injected, Tramadol is approximately 10% as effective as morphine. Most oral doses are 50 to 400 mg daily up to 600 mg for the most severe cases.
Some of the possible side effects of taking Tramadol include sweating, nausea, vomiting, respiratory depression and drowsiness. Although many doctors prescribe Tramadol or Ultram for pain relief, the drug may become psychologically and physically addictive.
